RANGER is a replica of the "Super J-Class" yacht which successfully defended the Americas Cup in 1937 with a 4-0 win over the British yacht Endeavor II. The original RANGER was massive in sail area and volume with a steel hull and true to her classic lineage, the current RANGER is the largest volume of any of the “J-Class” yachts. The successful build of the current 136’ RANGER replica, launched by Danish Yachts in 2003 was the result of a passionate yachtsman’s vision and helped relaunch the “J-Class” as a successful fleet honoring this majestic 1930’s era in yachting history. Naval architects Studio Scanu, Reichel-Pugh, and Fred Elliott worked with the original lines of Starling Burgess and Sparkman and Stephens to create a “Super J” that not only wins in regattas, but cruises in style as a proper luxury yacht.
RANGER was designed and built with a steel hull and deck making her extremely stiff and strong in all and any conditions. Since her initial launching in 2003, there have been several refit efforts to reduce tonnage and thereby increase performance in varied conditions. The latest was a very comprehensive restoration and refit completed in Holland at Vitter’s Shipyard in 2019 for her current owner. Veteran J-Class Captain, Greg Sloat and his team managed a 16-month redesign of her deck layout and technical spaces encompassing every system aboard the yacht. The result reduced RANGER by 6 tons in the ends, ballast and aloft, where it matters most, and streamlined and renewed the expansive teak deck for more efficient sailing as well as much more comfortable and safe owner areas. All machinery was “0” hour rebuilt, and all systems upgraded. The hydraulic system that powers the sail handing systems supercharged to handle her vast sail area in all conditions. Hydraulics updated to 560L/min flow and 250 bars of pressure. Can be controlled with custom PLC system both below deck and on deck. It has multiple modes for racing plus cruising to customize flows and pressures for each instance. The central guest cockpit and doghouse were redesigned and rebuilt enhancing owner enjoyment areas on deck. The interior design includes the only J-Class yacht with 4 double owner/guest staterooms plus room for up to 8 crew. The interior boasts timeless elegance in high gloss book matched raised panel mahogany that is superbly detailed and maintained. Countless hours were spent on fitting modern technologies and living concepts in a vintage designed sailing yacht that conformed to the J-Class Association’s rules and regulations. She is the epitome of a "spirit of tradition" yacht and now fully renovated to exacting standards all approved and compliant to Lloyds Classification standards.
RANGER’S interior is a work of art in high gloss raised paneled mahogany, teak and holly floors, white headliner, and exquisite detailing true to the 1930’s elegance she emulates. The interior is finished in high gloss varnish which is in superb condition. All heads are beautifully detailed in art deco style tiling and lighting. Accommodation includes (4) four staterooms aft allowing for 8 -10 total berths. The headroom in the interior of the yacht is an impressive 2.2m / 7.2 feet at a minimum throughout.
The beautifully appointed full-width master stateroom aft with ensuite head and stall shower has a split mattress king berth with leather settees and ample hanging and drawer storage. Twin large overhead hatches and enhanced lighting via additional prisms.
There are 3 double guest staterooms forward of the Master aft starting with an over/under cabin that shares a head/ shower with the adjacent larger double just forward on the port side. The head for these staterooms also doubles as a guest day head. On starboard there is a slightly larger double stateroom with privet ensuite head/shower. The 2 forward guest cabins can sleep 3 guests if needs with pullman berths. All are well lit and have ample stowage.
Forward of the guest accommodations is the main saloon which is the cozy yet formally exquisite center piece of the yacht divided into a rich leather settee on the port side with TV and drinks fringe access and significantly ornate dining table on starboard capable of formal dining for 8-10. The elaborate central opening “butterfly hatch” skylight allows light to flood into the saloon and serve as ventilation to the area. Cabinetry and service stowage abound around the entire space. Elegant teak and holly floors and white head liners with LED ambient
lighting and fixed sconces add to the art deco ambiance.
The professionally equipped galley is forward of the saloon/dining area and to port with generous counter spaces and updated appliance and cabinetry. Generous stainless-steel refrigeration and freezer boxes are fitted in the galley as well as duplicated in the lower tank deck for massive cold storage. Access down to the technical areas, pump room and tank deck is through a large hatch. The crew mess for up to 8 is across from the galley to starboard and is equipped with all ships monitoring systems and video. Up to eight crew are housed forward of the galley in three cabins with two heads. The forward cabin sleeps four while two crew share in each of the other cabins.
The engine room has been generously designed to house all systems and machinery while offering over 7-foot headroom and great access to all areas for proper maintenance. The condition of the technical spaces is superb and resembles a newish vessel owing to the complete gutting, painting and reinstallation of all plumbing and systems in 2019. The spaces in RANGER are unique in the J-Class fleet, which will translate into better maintenance and more comfortable cruising and racing for years to come.
