WHARF RAT is finished in the factory Alpi mahogany scheme, a warm, straight-grained veneer that reads considerably richer than the light oak alternative and sits well against the pale overhead panels and the Ultraleather cushions specified when the boat was ordered. Nauta Design's brief for the 46.1 was to trade the traditional chart table for daylight and volume, and the interior feels a full size larger than her hull length suggests: long hull windows at seated eye level, cabin-side ports, and opening overhead hatches in every compartment. Every deck hatch carries an Oceanair blind and shade and every portlight a shade, so the boat can be shut down against sun and bugs without improvisation.
The companionway drops into the heart of the boat. Immediately to port is the L-shaped galley, set at the foot of the steps so the cook can brace against the companionway module on either tack. Opposite to starboard is the guest head with an attached stall shower. Forward to starboard, a U-shaped settee wraps a dining table that lowers with a filler cushion to make a fourth berth; opposite to port is a straight settee with the laptop desk and electronics display against the forward bulkhead. Through a solid door forward, the owner's stateroom takes the full beam of the bow, with an island queen berth, standing room at the foot of the berth on both sides, twin hanging lockers, and separate head and shower compartments split port and starboard. Aft, twin guest cabins tuck beneath the cockpit to port and starboard, each with a double berth, hanging locker and hull port.

MAIN SALOON
The saloon sits at the widest part of the boat and is lit from both sides by long hull windows as well as overhead hatches. The U-shaped settee to starboard wraps a dining table that lowers on its pedestal and takes a filler cushion to make a fourth berth; the straight settee to port faces it. Stainless poles between the cockpit arch and the coachroof give genuinely good handholds on the way below, which matters more than it sounds on a boat with this much beam.

MASTER STATEROOM
The owner's stateroom is forward and takes full advantage of the volume the stepped hull carries above the waterline. The island queen berth is reachable from both sides with real standing room at its foot, and the compartment is divided into separate head and shower spaces rather than the single wet head usual at this size. It has its own dedicated air conditioning unit, and the head and shower are air conditioned too.

The L-shaped galley is to port at the foot of the companionway, which is the right place for it on a boat this beamy: the cook wedges against the companionway module on either tack rather than being thrown across an open cabin. NAVIGATION STATION
In place of a traditional chart table, Nauta specified a dedicated laptop desk against the forward saloon bulkhead to port with a flat-screen display mounted above it. It is a deliberate choice that reflects how these boats are actually navigated, and it buys back meaningful saloon volume in the bargain. Navigation is done from the Zeus displays at the helms; there is no chartplotter at the desk.

ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
WHARF RAT was ordered with both of Beneteau's B&G electronics packages rather than one: the Coastal pack at the starboard helm and the Offshore pack at the port helm. The practical result is a full B&G system with a Zeus³ multifunction touchscreen at each wheel rather than a plotter at one and a repeater at the other, with NAC-3 autopilot control at starboard, a Triton² instrument display at port and a WR10 wireless remote so the pilot can be adjusted from anywhere on deck. Radar, AIS, wireless wind and upgraded sensors were added on top, and the owner has since fitted Starlink and an IridiumGO! for communications well beyond cell range.

HULL
The 46.1's hull is a Pascal Conq design and one of the more consequential shapes in the current Oceanis range. The canoe body flares hard to a chine immediately above the waterline - a stepped hull that keeps a narrow entry forward for a soft ride while carrying maximum beam aft for form stability and interior volume. Twin rudders keep a blade properly immersed when the boat heels onto that chine, which keeps the helm light when the breeze is up and makes her well-mannered backing down. The hull is a monolithic solid polyester laminate over a bonded structural counter-mold; the deck is an injection-molded fiberglass and Saerform foam-cored sandwich with a molded-in diamond nonskid.

The deck plan is arranged so that everything happens aft: all winches and stoppers are within reach of the two helms, which leaves the coachroof clear and the side decks unobstructed. Side decks are wide, the toerail is molded in, and the bulwarks are raised enough to give real footing when the boat is heeled. Forward of the mast, a deep belowdecks sail locker with a stainless ladder and shelving sits just aft of the anchor locker - the right arrangement for digging out a reaching sail without wrestling it up a hatch, and it carries a second windlass remote so the anchor can be worked from the bow.

The folding blades matter more than they sound: they cut a real amount of drag under sail against the fixed three-blade that came as standard, and on a boat that will spend most of her life sailing rather than motoring that is worth having. She shows 816 hours and the 1,000-hour service was completed in Summer 2025. The engine sits beneath the companionway in a soundproofed compartment with access from the companionway and from both aft cabins.

The 46.1 is the boat that finally made a big Beneteau make sense for the Chesapeake, and WHARF RAT is the best-prepared example of it I have seen. Two things separate her. The first is how she was ordered: the ICW-height mast and the shoal keel were specified together, deliberately, by an owner who intended to use the boat where most 47-footers cannot go. At 63' 6" she sits inside the Intracoastal Waterway's 65-foot fixed bridge standard that a standard-rig 46.1 at 66' 8" does not, and at 5' 9" of draft she can work the Bay's creeks and gunkholes rather than watching them go by. The second is everything added since. A watermaker, a Victron inverter system with Cerbo GX monitoring, Starlink, an IridiumGO!, a Viking liferaft, a Para-Tech drogue, a Fortress storm anchor and a tender with both electric and gas outboards are not boxes ticked on an order form - they are the equipment list of an owner who went places. Add 36,000 BTU of three-zone air conditioning on a Cummins Onan generator, a house bank and inverter renewed in 2024, and 816 easy hours on an 80 hp Yanmar with the 1,000-hour service behind it, and she is ready to leave for the Bahamas or to live aboard comfortably at a Chesapeake slip without a project list first.
