The J/121 combines offshore strength, powerful reaching performance, water ballast,
and a manageable sail plan into a fast and versatile platform. The design is especially
well suited for short-handed distance racing, yet remains equally capable around the
buoys or in performance cruising mode.
Raven has been developed far beyond factory specification. Her systems, rigging, sail
inventory, safety equipment, and electronics have been thoughtfully upgraded to
support serious offshore campaigns. The boat is organized for efficiency, safety, and
speed, with numerous custom refinements aimed at reducing crew workload and
improving performance in both crewed and short-handed configurations.
The J/121 hull and deck are vacuum-infused using the SCRIMP process in a
temperature-controlled environment, with biaxial and unidirectional E-glass fabrics. The
hull uses end-grain balsa core for durability, while the deck uses Corecell foam core for
weight savings. High-density core inserts and additional reinforcements are placed in
high-load areas.
The structure is engineered to exceed ISO 12215 Category A and ABS standards. Key
construction features include:
• Two watertight bulkheads
• Molded structural keel grid
• Composite mast bearing beam
• Carbon fiber compression post
• Molded main bulkhead bonded and tabbed to hull and deck
• High-aspect, low-VCG L-keel with lead ballast
• Balanced composite spade rudder with stainless rudder post
• Jefa self-aligning rudder bearings and twin pedestal steering
The hull is finished in Flag Blue Awlgrip in 2019. The deck is white with contrasting
light grey nonskid.
Raven is equipped with a Southern Spars carbon fiber autoclave-cured mast with
double swept-back carbon spreaders, carbon boom, rod rigging, carbon bow sprit, and
a high-performance sail handling package.
Key rig features include:
• Southern Spars carbon mast and boom
